Police were called to the Riudellots slaughterhouse in Girona when more than 100 protestors entered the premises and chained themselves to the facilities.
Demonstrators carried banners asking for the sacrifice of animals to stop. Many wore helmets, hoods or covered their faces to avoid recognition.
Workers at the plant said that protestors had bundled seven pigs into a van and later Libération Animale 269 confirmed: “Sacco, Vanzetti, Sacha, Anaël, Pouiki, Sydney and Louison are on their way to new resistance spaces!”
Footage of the demonstration that involved around 130 individuals from around Europe showed police with riot headgear trying to remove protestors from the premises.
Libération Animale 269 said that the main objective was to “release seven victims and block the industry as long as possible to cause significant economic damage and to show our determination to generate a relationship of forces.”
Mossos d’Esquadra regional police eventually cleared all the protestors from the premises after more than six hours. Two demonstrators were reported to have been arrested.
