Please join us as we relaunch this radical space for discussion and organizing. As members of the Book Fair Collective, we believe it is essential to express protest and rebellion against the highly authoritarian capital-State system that by its very nature offers nothing more than endless war, vast social inequality, and utter ecological ruin. We seek to promote solidarity and unity among the various communities in struggle of Los Angeles, Southern California, and the occupied region of the U.S. Southwest. We have two themes for the Book Fair this year: “Red and Black October: Revisiting the ‘Unknown’ Anarchist Revolution of 1917 A Century Later,” and “From the Media to the Streets: Against the Resurgence of the Alt-Right.” In February 1917, during the depths of World War I, struggling proletarians and peasants launched a revolution in Russia that overthrew the hated Tsar, opening the field to the liberation of the land, cities, and—indeed—the world. Workers, peasants, and soldiers organized themselves in soviets (or councils), seized the land, took control of the factories, and mutinied en masse. Yet this emancipatory social revolution met with fierce repression by the Bolshevik Party, which seized power in October 1917, thereafter mobilizing to suppress the anarchists and autonomous workers’ and peasants’ movements through the Red Terror and “War Communism.” The result of a victorious authoritarianism defeating the popular revolutions was the rise of Stalin and the defamation of communism and radicalism in the minds of many. At this year’s Book Fair, we are interested in exploring the history, antecedents, legacies, and futures of the Russian Revolution, notably in light of its often-misleading representations, which render its anarchist aspects “unknown.” We believe that the courageous example of the people in revolt toppling despots is especially relevant to our situation in 2017. In the last several years, the far right has been growing in prominence in State-sponsored platforms and in grassroots organizing around the globe and in the U.S. in the past few years. The election and inauguration of Donald Trump has not only continued and aggravated the acts of violence against the oppressed but also pardoned, legitimized, and emboldened explicit white supremacists, the KKK, and the Neo-Nazi “Alt-Right” with newfound confidence, while the inescapable profiling of political coalitions and incidents by the media propagates information in unprecedented ways. How did we get here? What are the threats of fascist organizing today? In what ways do existing forms of oppression and the newly rising far-right force fortify each other? What kinds of successful strategies have different communities adopted against the far-right, both today and in the past? While our first theme explores the past and the futures of 1917, our second theme invites you to consider the contemporary conditions of resistance: “From the Media to the Streets: Against the Resurgence of the Alt-Right.” We believe the two themes complement each other. In light of the rise of the far-right as a movement in the streets and on open political platforms, we see an urgent need to organize community self-defense and social revolution against the far-right. We must also remember, however, that the ideals espoused by the fascist force are the very ones that the modern State is founded upon: certainly the United States. Is it so strange that Donald Trump, a real-estate mogul and a television personality, now holds the executive position of the government of the United States—a country founded upon and sustained by slavery and the genocide of indigenous peoples, the exploitation of nature, obsessive conformism, and accumulation of private wealth? We must recognize the lineage of our comrades, past and present, in this country and globally, that have always resisted against such regulatory norms and the violence of the capitalist State and its beneficiaries in ways both minute and colossal, known and unknown. At the core of this lineage of continued resistance, we locate the anarchist spirit of solidarity and striving for freedom. In the meantime, as we face the resurgence of fascism at the centennial mark of the Russian Revolution, the depth of imperialist militarism and ecological destruction continue to threaten us, fueled by the pervasive logic of capitalism that sustains the far-right and the State. We believe that anarchist ideas and organizing practices are more relevant and important now than ever before. How do we advance popular power against a system that is prepared to destroy humanity and nature simply to uphold privilege and irrationality? This is our challenge. We hope you will join us in asking the questions, finding the answers, and discovering the joy and power of solidarity in the collective struggle for the creation of a better world. Esta revolución social liberadora se enfrentó con la represión brutal de lxs bolcheviques, quienes tomaron el poder el octubre del 1917, y posteriormente se movilizaron a suprimir a los anarquistas y los movimientos autonomos de obrerxs y campesinxs a través de la Terror Roja y el “Comunismo de Guerra.” El resultado de un autoritarianismo que les venció a las revoluciones populares fue el surgimiento de Stalin y la difamación del comunismo y el radicalismo en la mente de muchxs. En la Feria del Libro de éste año, nos interesa explorar la historia, los antecedentes, los legados y los futuros de la Revolución rusa, considerando en particular su representación a menudo falsa, que oculta sus aspectos netamente anarquistas. Creemos que el ejemplo valiente del pueblo en revuelta derrocando a los déspotas es sumamente pertinente a nuestra situación en 2017. Durante los últimos años, la derecha extrema se ha estado expandiendo por medio de las plataformas estatales y la organización popular en el mundo y los Estados Unidos. La elección e inauguración de Donald Trump no sólo ha continuado y empeorado la violencia en contra de lxs oprimidxs sino que también ha indultado, legitimizado y alentado a lxs supremacistas blancxs, el KKK, y el “Alt-Right” neonazi con una confianza nueva, mientras que la vigilancia inescapable mediática de las coaliciones politicas e incidentes difunde la informacion de maneras sin precedentes. ¿Cómo llegamos hasta aqui? ¿Cómo nos amenazan lxs fascistas hoy en día? ¿En cuáles maneras se fortalecen entre sí las formas vigentes de opresión con las fuerzas nuevamente surgiendo de la derecha extrema? ¿Cuáles estrategias éxitosos se han adoptado entre las comunidades opuestas a la derecha extrema, tanto históricamente como actualmente? Nuestro primer tema explora el pasado y el futuro de 1917, mientras que nuestro segundo tema les invita a contemplar las condiciones contemporáneas de resistencia. Creemos que los dos temas se complementan, el uno al otro. Teniendo en cuenta el surgimiento de la extrema derecha como movimiento abierto en las calles y en las plataformas politicas, vemos la necesidad urgente de organizar autodefensas comunitarias y la revolución social en contra de la extrema derecha. Igual tenemos que acordarnos que los ideales proclamados por éstas fuerzas fascistas son los mismos en que se basa el Estado moderno, y Estados Unidos sin duda. ¿De veras nos parece raro que Trump, un magnate de inmuebles y una personalidad de la televisión, ahora sea el jefe ejecutivo de los Estados Unidos—un país que se basa en la esclavitud y el genocidio de lxs indígenas, la destrucción de la naturaleza, un conformismo reinante, y la acumulación de las riquezas privadas? Hay que reconocer la linage de nuestrxs compañerxs, pasadxs y presentes, en este país y por todo el mundo, quienes siempre han resistido tales normas regulativas junto con la violencia del Estado capitalista y sus beneficiarixs de escala granda y chica, conocidxs o no conocidxs. En el núcleo de ésta linage de la resistencia contínua vemos el espiritu anarquista de la solidaridad y la lucha por la libertad. Mientras tanto, nos enfrentamos con el resurgimiento del fascismo cien años después de la Revolución rusa, la profundidad del militarismo imperialista y la perdición ambiental—todo impulsado por la lógica perversa del capitalismo que sostiene tanto al Estado como a la extrema derecha. Estámos ciertxs que las ideas y prácticas organizativas anarquistas retienen toda su relevancia actualmente, y que de hecho son más importante hoy en día que en cualquier otro momento histórico. ¿Cómo se puede avanzar el poder popular en contra de un sistema que está dispuesto a destruir la humanidad y la naturaleza simplemente por mantener las relaciones actuales del privilegio y la irracionalidad? Esto es nuestro desafío. Esperamos que nos puedan acompañar en hacer las preguntas, hallar las respuestas, y descubrir la alegría y el poder de la solidaridad en la lucha colectiva hacia la creación de un mundo mejor.
