Retired police dog saved by animal rights group

As if there was another reason to scorn the police!

policedogA retired police dog was ditched by his former law enforcement owner at a Brooklyn animal shelter last week after working nearly his whole life fighting crime — and was only saved from possible euthanasia at the last minute, an animal rights group says.

Buster — an 8-year-old German shepherd who worked patrol, narcotics and training since he was 18 months old — was suddenly left homeless Wednesday after his retired owner “could no longer keep him due to personal problems,” said the city’s Animal Care and Control Office.

After a public outcry by animals lovers tracking the canine’s fate online, Queens-based Four Paws Sake stepped in to right Buster’s wrong.

“Buster has permanent placement with a Handler for Retired K9’s,” the group announced on their Facebook page Sunday afternoon.

“We did nothing out of the ordinary as a rescue group. We brought a dog to safety where he will live out the remainder of his life happy, with experienced hands, in the right home.”

It remains unclear what law enforcement agency the dog served with.
