received anonymously: June 2015 – In broad daylight, 3 crayfish were liberated from a live seafood market. Once they were in safe hands they were quickly released back into the waters in which they were originally captured. A small crayfish meat trade exists in the United States where live crayfish are captured in traps from rivers, lakes, and swamps. They are shipped sometimes hundreds of miles (in some cases across continents) to be sold in restaurants and seafood markets, where these beings (who feel pain, stress and anxiety) are eventually boiled alive and eaten. The crayfish at this particular market were found in deplorable conditions; stacked on top of each other in crates without access to water. Many were clearly wounded with missing limbs and claws. Unfortunately these conditions are not an anomaly for most live seafood markets, it is the norm. This action was inspired by the recent open liberation of 9 lobsters by the National Animal Rights Association in Ireland. We would like to encourage activists to put their shoplifting skills to use in the service of animal liberation. If you can ‘liberate’ a tofurky from Whole Foods, then you can liberate actual animals from places of violence and exploitation. In Solidarity with Marius Mason and all long term anarchist prisoners. ‘…better lives have been lived in the margins, locked in the prisons and lost on the gallows than have ever been enshrined in palaces.’ -Crustacean Liberation |
