British counter-terror police have been engaged in protecting meat industry workers as action by vegan activists has become move violent.<\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/a>Workers at abattoirs, farms, and meat-producing factories have been under increasing threat by far-left animal rights campaigners, with the\u00a0British Poultry Council and the National Pig Association being just two of the bodies seeking support from the counter-terrorism force,\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0Mail on Sunday<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In one historic case reported by Channel 4\u00a0Dispatches<\/em>, militant vegan group SAVE attacked a Jewish kosher abattoir in east London two years ago, breaking into the building and scrawling anti-Semitic slogans on the wall, with one protester yelling, \u201cIt\u2019s a holocaust. You Nazis!\u201d<\/p>\n

The report of meat producers engaging counter-terror police comes after\u00a0Waitrose Food<\/em>magazine editor William Sitwell was\u00a0forced to resign<\/a>\u00a0over a joke about vegans, and found himself subjected to vitriol and threats of violence against him and his family.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Mr Sitwell told the\u00a0Mail on Sunday<\/em>, \u201cThere were threats to rape my wife, tie her up, and cut off her genitals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Organised vegan activists have been\u00a0calling for<\/a>\u00a0their lifestyle to be given the same \u201cprotected characteristic\u201d status as race, religion, sexuality, gender, and disability, under discrimination laws, which would make it a criminal offence to mock or discriminate against vegans.<\/p>\n

The calls followed the case of\u00a0Jordi Casamitjana in early December, who\u00a0took<\/a>\u00a0his discrimination claim to the High Court after alleging that his firing from the\u00a0League Against Cruel Sports was due to discrimination against his lifestyle.<\/p>\n

He was dismissed after disclosing details of the company pension fund investment that conflicted with his worldview \u2014 namely, that the pension fund invested in firms that engaged in animal testing. The organisation maintains he was fired for gross misconduct.<\/p>\n

The results of the court hearing in March 2019 will determine whether veganism is a \u201cphilosophical belief\u201d and if so, would result in the eating habits being covered by the UK\u2019s 2010 Equality Act.<\/p>\n

The Countryside Alliance has said that there has been a rise in attacks on butchers and abattoirs in recent years.<\/p>\n

In May, Breitbart London\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0that staff at a butchers in Kent were\u00a0\u201cliving in fear\u201d after vegan extremists threatened to firebomb the establishment, with the outside of the building being daubed in\u00a0Animal Liberation Front graffiti \u2014 a group that the American FBI determined to be \u201ccriminal extremists.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
