(WLOS) \u2014\u00a0<\/span>A national animal rights activist made his first court appearance here in the mountains Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne Hsiung was arrested Thursday after landing in Asheville where he was speaking at VeganFest.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities say Hsiung took a baby goat from the Sospiro Goat Ranch in Pisgah Forest, a business that specializes in providing goat meat to consumers.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"mixpoPID94598\">\n<div class=\"mixpo_positioning_pushdown\">\n<div class=\"mixpo_positioning_pushdown_node\">\n<div class=\"mixpo_view_controller\">\n<div class=\"mixpo_control\">\n<div class=\"mixpo_chrome_container\">\n<div class=\"mixpo_chrome_border\">According to Hsiung, he removed the baby goat because it had pneumonia and lice. Hsiung claims he was legally justified under the doctrine of legal necessity.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cGoats have the same feelings as a dog and are just as deserving of good care,\u201d Hsiung said. \u201cThe law should target animal abusers, not animal rescuers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hsiung now faces felony charges of breaking and entering and larceny, and up to 6 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday, a probable cause hearing was set for July 5th.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ASHEVILLE, N.C.
