You\u2019ve heard of militant religious and political groups \u2013 but have you heard of militant vegans?<\/span><\/p>\n

Australians are the second biggest meat eaters in the world, the biggest exporters of red meat, and our\u00a0dairy industry is worth $13.7 billion<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 but we are also the world’s\u00a0third fastest growing vegan market<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the UK a dramatic rise in veganism has led to clashes between those who want all animal products banned and the livestock farmers whose way of life is under threat – and it\u2019s getting nasty.<\/span><\/p>\n

This week on\u00a0Dateline<\/em>, reporter Dean Cornish meets the British farmer who\u2019s been called a “rapist and a murderer” \u2013 and received kidnap threats against his two young children \u2013 and the Australian-born vegan activist Joey Carbstrong, who is kicking up a storm in the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n

Carbstrong,\u00a0 an animal liberation activist and social media personality who has made it his life\u2019s work to abolish the meat and dairy trade. He believes that farmers are \u2018playing\u00a0god\u2019 with the lives of animals and consumers who are ultimately responsible.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnimals are not willing participants in any of this\u201d, explains Carbstrong.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe farmers are determining when they will die. They are being chopped up into pieces and served to us as consumers. What I want consumers to understand is that they are the most key player in all of this. Without their money, these industries do not exist.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Patrick Hutchinson, CEO of the Australian Meat Industry Council, says it\u2019s easy for vegans like Joey Armstrong to ignore the\u00a0benefits of an $18 billion industry<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t have to care about anybody but himself. He doesn’t care about working families, he doesn’t care about working Australians, he doesn’t care about anybody else but himself and the outcome that he’s looking for, period.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

More than 56 billion farm animals are\u00a0slaughtered globally each year<\/a>, and that number is expected to rise as the human population booms.<\/span><\/p>\n

Animal agriculture is responsible for\u00a0roughly 18\u00a0<\/a>per cent\u00a0of greenhouse gas emissions<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a080\u00a0<\/a>per cent\u00a0of the world\u2019s deforestation<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the rise of veganism, the future of the meat and dairy industries are uncertain.<\/span><\/p>\n
