Please join us as we relaunch this\r\nradical space for discussion and organizing.\r\n\r\nAs members of the Book Fair Collective, we believe it is essential to\r\nexpress protest and rebellion against the highly authoritarian\r\ncapital-State system that by its very nature offers nothing more than\r\nendless war, vast social inequality, and utter ecological ruin.\r\n\r\nWe seek to promote solidarity and unity among the various communities in\r\nstruggle of Los Angeles, Southern California, and the occupied region of\r\nthe U.S. Southwest. We have two themes for the Book Fair this year: \u201cRed\r\nand Black October: Revisiting the \u2018Unknown\u2019 Anarchist Revolution of 1917\r\nA Century Later,\u201d and \u201cFrom the Media to the Streets: Against the\r\nResurgence of the Alt-Right.\u201d\r\n\r\nIn February 1917, during the depths of World War I, struggling\r\nproletarians and peasants launched a revolution in Russia that overthrew\r\nthe hated Tsar, opening the field to the liberation of the land, cities,\r\nand\u2014indeed\u2014the world. Workers, peasants, and soldiers organized\r\nthemselves in soviets (or councils), seized the land, took control of\r\nthe factories, and mutinied en masse.\r\n\r\nYet this emancipatory social revolution met with fierce repression by\r\nthe Bolshevik Party, which seized power in October 1917, thereafter\r\nmobilizing to suppress the anarchists and autonomous workers\u2019 and\r\npeasants\u2019 movements through the Red Terror and \u201cWar Communism.\u201d The\r\nresult of a victorious authoritarianism defeating the popular\r\nrevolutions was the rise of Stalin and the defamation of communism and\r\nradicalism in the minds of many.\r\n\r\nAt this year\u2019s Book Fair, we are interested in exploring the history,\r\nantecedents, legacies, and futures of the Russian Revolution, notably in\r\nlight of its often-misleading representations, which render its\r\nanarchist aspects \u201cunknown.\u201d We believe that the courageous example of\r\nthe people in revolt toppling despots is especially relevant to our\r\nsituation in 2017.\r\n\r\nIn the last several years, the far right has been growing in prominence\r\nin State-sponsored platforms and in grassroots organizing around the\r\nglobe and in the U.S. in the past few years. The election and\r\ninauguration of Donald Trump has not only continued and aggravated the\r\nacts of violence against the oppressed but also pardoned, legitimized,\r\nand emboldened explicit white supremacists, the KKK, and the Neo-Nazi\r\n\u201cAlt-Right\u201d with newfound confidence, while the inescapable profiling of\r\npolitical coalitions and incidents by the media propagates information\r\nin unprecedented ways.\r\n\r\nHow did we get here? What are the threats of fascist organizing today?\r\nIn what ways do existing forms of oppression and the newly rising\r\nfar-right force fortify each other? What kinds of successful strategies\r\nhave different communities adopted against the far-right, both today and\r\nin the past? While our first theme explores the past and the futures of\r\n1917, our second theme invites you to consider the contemporary\r\nconditions of resistance: \u201cFrom the Media to the Streets: Against the\r\nResurgence of the Alt-Right.\u201d\r\n\r\nWe believe the two themes complement each other. In light of the rise of\r\nthe far-right as a movement in the streets and on open political\r\nplatforms, we see an urgent need to organize community self-defense and\r\nsocial revolution against the far-right. We must also remember, however,\r\nthat the ideals espoused by the fascist force are the very ones that the\r\nmodern State is founded upon: certainly the United States. Is it so\r\nstrange that Donald Trump, a real-estate mogul and a television\r\npersonality, now holds the executive position of the government of the\r\nUnited States\u2014a country founded upon and sustained by slavery and the\r\ngenocide of indigenous peoples, the exploitation of nature, obsessive\r\nconformism, and accumulation of private wealth?\r\n\r\nWe must recognize the lineage of our comrades, past and present, in this\r\ncountry and globally, that have always resisted against such regulatory\r\nnorms and the violence of the capitalist State and its beneficiaries in\r\nways both minute and colossal, known and unknown. At the core of this\r\nlineage of continued resistance, we locate the anarchist spirit of\r\nsolidarity and striving for freedom.\r\n\r\nIn the meantime, as we face the resurgence of fascism at the centennial\r\nmark of the Russian Revolution, the depth of imperialist militarism and\r\necological destruction continue to threaten us, fueled by the pervasive\r\nlogic of capitalism that sustains the far-right and the State.\r\n\r\nWe believe that anarchist ideas and organizing practices are more\r\nrelevant and important now than ever before. How do we advance popular\r\npower against a system that is prepared to destroy humanity and nature\r\nsimply to uphold privilege and irrationality? This is our challenge. Lxs proletarixs, campesinxs y\r\nsoldados se organizaron en soviets (concejos), ocuparon la tierra,\r\ntomaron control de las f\u00e1bricas, y se amotinaron de forma mas\u00edva.\r\n\r\nEsta revoluci\u00f3n social liberadora se enfrent\u00f3 con la represi\u00f3n \r\nbrutal de lxs bolcheviques, quienes tomaron el poder el octubre del\r\n1917, y posteriormente se movilizaron a suprimir a los anarquistas y los\r\nmovimientos autonomos de obrerxs y campesinxs a trav\u00e9s de la Terror Roja\r\ny el \u201cComunismo de Guerra.\u201d El resultado de un autoritarianismo que les\r\nvenci\u00f3 a las revoluciones populares fue el surgimiento de Stalin y la\r\ndifamaci\u00f3n del comunismo y el radicalismo en la mente de muchxs.\r\n\r\nEn la Feria del Libro de \u00e9ste a\u00f1o, nos interesa explorar la historia,\r\nlos antecedentes, los legados y los futuros de la Revoluci\u00f3n rusa,\r\nconsiderando en particular su representaci\u00f3n a menudo falsa, que oculta\r\nsus aspectos netamente anarquistas. Creemos que el ejemplo valiente del\r\npueblo en revuelta derrocando a los d\u00e9spotas es sumamente pertinente a\r\nnuestra situaci\u00f3n en 2017.\r\n\r\nDurante los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, la derecha extrema se ha estado expandiendo\r\npor medio de las plataformas estatales y la organizaci\u00f3n popular en el\r\nmundo y los Estados Unidos. La elecci\u00f3n e inauguraci\u00f3n de Donald Trump\r\nno s\u00f3lo ha continuado y empeorado la violencia en contra de lxs\r\noprimidxs sino que tambi\u00e9n ha indultado, legitimizado y alentado a lxs\r\nsupremacistas blancxs, el KKK, y el \u201cAlt-Right\u201d neonazi con una\r\nconfianza nueva, mientras que la vigilancia inescapable medi\u00e1tica de las\r\ncoaliciones politicas e incidentes difunde la informacion de maneras sin\r\nprecedentes.\r\n\r\n\u00bfC\u00f3mo llegamos hasta aqui? \u00bfC\u00f3mo nos amenazan lxs fascistas hoy en d\u00eda?\r\n\u00bfEn cu\u00e1les maneras se fortalecen entre s\u00ed las formas vigentes de\r\nopresi\u00f3n con las fuerzas nuevamente surgiendo de la derecha extrema?\r\n\u00bfCu\u00e1les estrategias \u00e9xitosos se han adoptado entre las comunidades\r\nopuestas a la derecha extrema, tanto hist\u00f3ricamente como actualmente?\r\nNuestro primer tema explora el pasado y el futuro de 1917, mientras que\r\nnuestro segundo tema les invita a contemplar las condiciones\r\ncontempor\u00e1neas de resistencia.\r\n\r\nCreemos que los dos temas se complementan, el uno al otro. Teniendo en\r\ncuenta el surgimiento de la extrema derecha como movimiento abierto en\r\nlas calles y en las plataformas politicas, vemos la necesidad urgente de\r\norganizar autodefensas comunitarias y la revoluci\u00f3n social en contra de\r\nla extrema derecha. Igual tenemos que acordarnos que los ideales\r\nproclamados por \u00e9stas fuerzas fascistas son los mismos en que se basa el\r\nEstado moderno, y Estados Unidos sin duda. \u00bfDe veras nos parece raro que\r\nTrump, un magnate de inmuebles y una personalidad de la televisi\u00f3n,\r\nahora sea el jefe ejecutivo de los Estados Unidos\u2014un pa\u00eds que se basa en\r\nla esclavitud y el genocidio de lxs ind\u00edgenas, la destrucci\u00f3n de la\r\nnaturaleza, un conformismo reinante, y la acumulaci\u00f3n de las riquezas\r\nprivadas?\r\n\r\nHay que reconocer la linage de nuestrxs compa\u00f1erxs, pasadxs y presentes,\r\nen este pa\u00eds y por todo el mundo, quienes siempre han resistido tales\r\nnormas regulativas junto con la violencia del Estado capitalista y sus\r\nbeneficiarixs de escala granda y chica, conocidxs o no conocidxs. En el\r\nn\u00facleo de \u00e9sta linage de la resistencia cont\u00ednua vemos el espiritu\r\nanarquista de la solidaridad y la lucha por la libertad.\r\n\r\nMientras tanto, nos enfrentamos con el resurgimiento del fascismo cien\r\na\u00f1os despu\u00e9s de la Revoluci\u00f3n rusa, la profundidad del militarismo\r\nimperialista y la perdici\u00f3n ambiental\u2014todo impulsado por la l\u00f3gica\r\nperversa del capitalismo que sostiene tanto al Estado como a la extrema\r\nderecha.\r\n\r\nEst\u00e1mos ciertxs que las ideas y pr\u00e1cticas organizativas anarquistas\r\nretienen toda su relevancia actualmente, y que de hecho son m\u00e1s\r\nimportante hoy en d\u00eda que en cualquier otro momento hist\u00f3rico. \u00bfC\u00f3mo se\r\npuede avanzar el poder popular en contra de un sistema que est\u00e1\r\ndispuesto a destruir la humanidad y la naturaleza simplemente por\r\nmantener las relaciones actuales del privilegio y la irracionalidad?\r\nEsto es nuestro desaf\u00edo.
