At the same time, over half of Americans said they were concerned about the treatment of animals used in aquariums, zoos, and in agriculture, with about a quarter reporting they were \u201cvery concerned.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>Compare that with the appalling (but not shocking) 2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/184466\/americans-satisfaction-blacks-treated-tumbles.aspx?g_source=satisfaction%20with%20way%20blacks%20treated&amp;g_medium=search&amp;g_campaign=tiles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-beacon=\"{&quot;p&quot;:{&quot;mnid&quot;:&quot;citation&quot;,&quot;mpid&quot;:14,&quot;plid&quot;:&quot;http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/184466\/americans-satisfaction-blacks-treated-tumbles.aspx?g_source=satisfaction%20with%20way%20blacks%20treated&amp;g_medium=search&amp;g_campaign=tiles&quot;,&quot;lnid&quot;:&quot;data&quot;}}\">data<\/a> suggesting that the majority of Americans were \u201csatisfied\u201d with how Hispanic, Asian, Arab, and Black people and women were treated in the U.S. Even in 2015, less than half of American\u2019s believed that black people are treated less fairly by the police. If anything, it seems that animal rights activists might have even more public support for their causes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>To put the point another way: If we think Black Lives Matter protests are likely to be effective when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/192701\/confidence-police-recovers-last-year-low.aspx?g_source=police&amp;g_medium=search&amp;g_campaign=tiles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-beacon=\"{&quot;p&quot;:{&quot;mnid&quot;:&quot;citation&quot;,&quot;mpid&quot;:15,&quot;plid&quot;:&quot;http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/192701\/confidence-police-recovers-last-year-low.aspx?g_source=police&amp;g_medium=search&amp;g_campaign=tiles&quot;,&quot;lnid&quot;:&quot;fifty-six percent &quot;}}\">fifty-six percent <\/a>of Americans (disturbingly) have \u201ca great deal or quite a lot of confidence in police,\u201d then why shouldn\u2019t we believe that protests could be an effective tool against animal agriculture, an institution that most Americans are actually concerned about?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>I think the fundamental mistake made by critics of confrontational advocacy is that they are <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@alexfelsinger\/direct-action-leading-where-c348cbfb4c58#.d2f7xwj2a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-beacon=\"{&quot;p&quot;:{&quot;mnid&quot;:&quot;citation&quot;,&quot;mpid&quot;:16,&quot;plid&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/medium.com\/@alexfelsinger\/direct-action-leading-where-c348cbfb4c58#.d2f7xwj2a&quot;,&quot;lnid&quot;:&quot;using&quot;}}\">using<\/a> the population of vegans and vegetarians as an estimate of the public support for pro-animal policy changes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"content-list-component image\"><span class=\"share-bar-image-wrapper\" data-beacon=\"{&quot;p&quot;:{&quot;mnid&quot;:&quot;entry_image&quot;}}\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image__src\" src=\"http:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/crop_0_0_813_607,scalefit_820_noupscale\/58b1fa242900002500beae78.png\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>The 2008 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/107293\/postderby-tragedy-38-support-banning-animal-racing.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-beacon=\"{&quot;p&quot;:{&quot;mnid&quot;:&quot;citation&quot;,&quot;mpid&quot;:17,&quot;plid&quot;:&quot;http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/107293\/postderby-tragedy-38-support-banning-animal-racing.aspx&quot;,&quot;lnid&quot;:&quot;poll&quot;}}\">poll<\/a> above, shows the reality: Over a third of Americans want a total ban on animal testing, sports like horse and dog racing, and biomedical research on animals; and the vast majority of Americans support \u201cstrict\u201d laws for the treatment of farmed animals. If public opinion doesn\u2019t disqualify confrontational activism for these issues, then it shouldn\u2019t for animal advocacy. It\u2019s also undeniable that we have the support necessary to effectively employ confrontational methods to expose the horrors of animal agriculture and hold abusers accountable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>Number two: <strong>Not all confrontational activism is created equal. <\/strong>Let me be clear, protesting in Whole Foods is not the only way to do confrontational activism for farmed animals.
