{"id":2213,"date":"2013-07-31T16:48:16","date_gmt":"2013-08-01T00:48:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/animalliberationpressoffice.org\/NAALPO\/?p=2213"},"modified":"2013-08-02T16:50:53","modified_gmt":"2013-08-03T00:50:53","slug":"mink-farm-near-burley-raided-by-animal-liberators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/animalliberationpressoffice.org\/NAALPO\/2013\/07\/31\/mink-farm-near-burley-raided-by-animal-liberators\/","title":{"rendered":"Mink Farm near Burley Raided by &#8220;Animal Liberators&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Boise Times-News<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/magicvalley.com\/search\/?l=50&amp;sd=desc&amp;s=start_time&amp;f=html&amp;byline=By%20Mychel%20Matthews%20-%20mmatthews%40magicvalley.com\">By Mychel Matthews &#8211; mmatthews@magicvalley.com<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<aside id=\"asset-related\"><\/aside>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/animalliberationpressoffice.org\/NAALPO\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/captivemink.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2214\" alt=\"captivemink\" src=\"https:\/\/animalliberationpressoffice.org\/NAALPO\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/captivemink.jpg\" width=\"324\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a>BURLEY \u2022 A mink farm southeast of town was hit last weekend by a group of self-avowed \u201canimal liberators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday evening, 4,800 mink were released from the Moyle mink farm at 575 E. 120 S., said Cassia County Sheriff Jay Heward.<\/p>\n<p>An estimated 90 percent of the mink were recaptured.<\/p>\n<p>A group known as Direct Action has claimed responsibility for the mink release on its website magazine \u201cBite Back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group acted \u201cwith love in our hearts,\u201d according to Bite Back.<\/p>\n<p>The activists said they targeted the farm because it is owned by Fur Commission USA board member Cindy Moyle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe felt that the Moyle Mink Ranch would be perfect to test out the efficacy of FCUSA\u2019s new emphasis on farm security,\u201d the group wrote in Bite Back. \u201cIn the case of the Moyles, the breeding records we destroyed represent over thirty years of painstaking genetic selection. There will be no recovering these genetic lines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The intruders entered the property by cutting chicken-wire fencing in eight areas at the rear of the farm, said Undersheriff George Warrell. They opened cages to release the mink.<\/p>\n<p>The activists \u201cknew exactly where to go to find the breeding cages,\u201d which contained valuable female breeding stock. Signs detailing the breeding history of the female mink were ripped from the cages and scattered on the ground. The mink are worth $100 each, but the breeding females are more valuable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no way to connect the breeding history with the females now, according to Mrs. Moyle,\u201d Warrell said.<\/p>\n<p>Heward said he has talked to county prosecutor Al Barrus. \u201cWe are prepared to prosecute, if we can find them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The raiders \u201cdon\u2019t have to be from around here,\u201d he said. \u201cThey could have come from Salt Lake or Boise. We know people travel great distances to do something they are passionate about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Animal Liberation Front (ALF)on June 1 released a 58-page instruction manual called \u201cThe Final Nail: Complete Guide to Destroying the Fur Industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Final Nail is a blueprint for committing a felony,\u201d Michael Whelan, executive director of the fur commission, told the Times-News last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s terrorism \u2014 that\u2019s exactly what it is,\u201d Whelan said. Some mink farmers sleep with \u201cguns by their bedsides. This is their livelihood being threatened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff\u2019s department is asking neighbors to report any suspicious activity. Heward can be reached at 208-878-1107.
