\"\"<\/a>BERNARDSTON \u2014 Members of an extremist animal rights group have claimed responsibility for the destruction of fencing and\u00a0release\u00a0of approximately\u00a0500 birds at\u00a0Fullflight Game Farm shortly after Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n

People affiliated with\u00a0the Animal Liberation Front\u00a0cut and ripped away 10 sections of fencing on the evening of\u00a0Nov. 24 to free \u201cbirds held captive at the facility,\u201d according to an email forwarded to the Recorder from\u00a0Joseph Buddenberg, a press officer with the North American Animal Liberation Press Office.<\/p>\n

The email states the business purpose-breeds pheasants and other birds \u201cto be sold for blood sports.\u201d This,\u00a0the email claims, means the animals are untamed and\u00a0capable of surviving in the wild.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s up to us to free them from their prisons so that they may run, swim and fly free,\u201d the email states.<\/p>\n

It also noted the economic damage of destroying 100 feet of fencing.<\/p>\n

According to a police report filed by Officer Darren Gale, he was dispatched to Fullflight Game Farm on Fox Hill Road at 8:16 a.m. on Nov. 25 to speak with owner Edwin Gray, who reported one of his pheasant enclosures had been vandalized overnight. Gale wrote that fencing had clearly been severed with wire cutters and the netting had been pulled away. Approximately 500 pheasants, estimated to be worth about $15 apiece, had escaped to a nearby brush. Gray reportedly told Gale the animals would likely return for food later in the day.<\/p>\n

Buddenberg\u00a0told the Recorder that the Animal Liberation Front, a\u00a0decentralized international organization, aims to free animals \u201cand also cause economic\u00a0damage to those who harm animals\u201d as a way of taking \u201cthe profit motive out of animal abuse.\u201d He said\u00a0the damage was significant but all claims emailed to him are anonymous.<\/p>\n

Gray also owns Silvery Moon Farm at 4 Brattleboro Road. A woman working at the holiday tree and wreath farm\u00a0said no one with the businesses had any comment for the newspaper. Attempts to reach the owners were unsuccessful.<\/p>\n

Buddenberg said Animal Liberation Front members stand by their\u00a0actions.\u00a0\u201cThose who oppress and abuse the innocent have no right,\u201d he said, comparing livestock farmers to those who profit off slavery or child labor. \u201cWhat these people did was an act of compassion, an act of nonviolence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buddenberg is no stranger to taking radical measures, having pleaded guilty in 2016 to one count of conspiracy to violate the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act,\u00a0a federal law\u00a0that criminalizes \u201cdamaging or interfering with the operations of an animal enterprise.\u201d He was\u00a0sentenced to two years in\u00a0prison and ordered to pay restitution of\u00a0$423,477 with codefendant\u00a0Nicole Kissane, according to the Los Angeles Times.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors said Buddenberg and Kissane caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage and losses during a cross-country\u00a0campaign against the fur industry that totaled 40,000 miles in the summer and fall of 2013.<\/p>\n
